Wayne England’s sublime striking cover for Waaargh Orks, the original Rogue Trader era Ork supplement, perfectly captures the chaotic energy and mischievous humour that defined early Warhammer 40,000.
This was first edition Rogue Trader, a time before the universe settled into the darker tone people know today. Back then the setting was wilder, stranger, and far more playful, and artists like Wayne England brought that spirit to life. Waaargh Orks was one of three remarkable Ork books released during the Rogue Trader era. The trilogy began with Waaargh Orks, followed by ’Ere We Go’, and finally Freebooterz. Together they explored Ork society, clans, warbands, and the anarchic kultur that made them one of the most entertaining factions in the early game.
It is actually quite unusual in the history of Games Workshop that a single faction received this level of attention. Three substantial supplements devoted entirely to one race is something that has rarely been repeated since, and it remains one of the most detailed explorations of a faction ever published. Wayne England was one of the defining artists of that era. His work carried enormous personality, with expressive characters and compositions that felt alive on the page. Even the most brutal Orks under his brush or coloured pencil had humour and character. Though Wayne sadly passed away some years ago, his artwork continues to be celebrated by collectors and fans of the classic Rogue Trader period.
This cover is a wonderful reminder of that moment in Warhammer history when the universe was experimental, imaginative, and full of strange ideas that helped shape everything that followed.
