The 19 implanted organs are very complicated, and because several of them only work properly or at all in the presence of other implants, the removal, mutation or failure of one organ can affect the precise functioning of the others. Many would be recruits don’t survive the inhumanly painful and involved process all the way to the end.
The most Distinctive of these implants is the black carapace; an unsightly machination, once applied, the carapace grows invasive tendrils throughout the body of the prospective marine, linking the various synthetic organs and physiological mutations to the hulking power armor that the recruit will don when this last implementation matures.
