The Crimson Paladins are the latest in my series of Space Marine chapters that don’t get much love. Outside of the official color scheme, there’s almost no art out there for them, so I decided to make some. This one came straight off the 40K Gallery Hit List.
This is the Codex chapter, not the Blood Angels Terminator unit from the Horus Heresy that shares the name. Their origin and Founding are unknown, but their homeworld is Fortress, and their fortress-monastery, Honour Hold, is built mostly underground to protect it from orbital strikes. A chapter that literally digs in felt like it deserved a tense, defensive scene.
For this piece I went dark and moody. A lone Crimson Paladin braces against a cracked wall with his bolter ready while fire breaks through from the other side. I kept most of the scene in shadow so the red armor and green eye lenses would stand out, and I spent a lot of time on the scratched, chipped armor to show he’s been through a few fights already.
