The Purging of Kadillus ~ cover art 2009
This wasnt the largest of file sizes.but I remember when working on the Space marine Battles covers that some of the pieces stretched to over 40k pixels in length ( Seige of Castelax..even bigger was Catechism of Hate) .. where I had to work on the artwork in 5 parts as each part was just under 2GB in size with an average of 3-400 layers ..(some individual pictures a thousand layers. Then as I progressed the picture id have to flattern large areas of the image( flattern as in merging the individual layers ) which became ridiculous as I had to remember where all the individual layers on the layers scroll were.It tookm in some cases 5 minutes to stroll the layers box in photoshop just to get from bottom to topBut the real problem wasnt that it was the computer ( at the time i was using a powerful Mac G5 computer,but even that would takes time ( 15 minutes) to open the files(artwork) and more than that to save the file every time I needed to save the artwork from working on it throughout the day . Working the details became an obssession even though the image on a book cover size was so infinitesimally small for my own piece of mind it had to be done.
THE STORY
Faced with an ork invasion of Piscina IV, the 3rd Company of the Dark Angels believes the threat to be minimal. As enemy numbers continue to increase, their commander, Captain Belial, insists that his Company are strong enough to resist. But Scout-Sergeant Naaman knows just how dangerous this foe can be, and when a renewed greenskin offensive takes the Dark Angels by surprise, the orks swarm towards Kadillus Harbour. Little do the Dark Angels know of the technological power available to the xenos, and the true scale of the threat they face. Belial, Naaman and their fellow Astartes fight a desperate siege at Kadillus, knowing that they must hold out until Imperial reinforcements arrive or the planet will be lost.
