Alpha Legion
I was recently commissioned to paint a personalised Space Marine II Squad portrait. Each of the players Astartes had unique livery and load-out which I replicated and posed in a manner that I felt best complimented them individually and when composed as a trio of battle brothers.
The second of these featured in this gallery is an Alpha Legion Sniper wielding a Bolt Sniper Rifle (Ophelian Liberation Alpha). It was great to get the opportunity to paint that classic Corvus helmet – the one I remember from back in the ‘80s. Really enjoyed all of that ornamentation on the sniper rifle and the difference in material to the Ceramite with the cloth of cloak/pauldron shrouds.
Throughout I thought I was painting a Raven Guard Successor Chapter Marine, it wasn’t until the end it was revealed to me that it was Alpha Legion – true to character – sneaky!
If you scroll through the gallery you’ll see some close ups on some of the characters’ details and how my style of painting – hatch, spatter and selective tonal value – is applied. I’ve noticed there are some similarities in my style of painting to the manner in which miniature painting techniques such as edge highlighting, dry brushing and the inclusion of and battle damage are used. I’ve got a huge amount of respect for miniature painting…
