ANGRON
Here we are again with our Primarch appointment.
This week I decided to paint Angron, another Primarch who lives through one of the greatest tragedies a character can endure: the absence of freedom, and more specifically, the absence of the possibility to CHOOSE.
Like many people, when I first approached Warhammer 40k lore I immediately interpreted Angron as the “Ares” of 40k, simply a furious and violent character. But just like the archetype of that god, he hides an enormous inner tragedy beneath all that rage.
Angron is a slave. He is a slave from birth until “death”.
Despite all his attempts to rebel and make choices of his own, he is constantly subdued and enslaved by a force greater than himself. Throughout his entire life, both mortal and demonic, that force is represented by the Butcher’s Nails, and by the pain and rage they endlessly feed inside him, forcing him to become a monster he was never truly meant to be.
I decided to portray him this way: suffering, furious ; not at those who will suffer his wrath, but at the thing that kept him in chains for his entire existence.
I love this character, and I hope I managed to portray him with dignity.
Special thanks to @jayzillax for suggesting Alan Ritchson as a facial reference for the overall shape and structure.
See you next Primarch.
