Feral Tyranids from a defeated Hive Fleet tendril roam the countryside. Imperial recon units are deployed to establish contact with survivors, destroy any Tyranid remnants, and recover equipment long lost decades ago.
Tyranid spikes are fossilized to stone, overtaken by nature. The unreclaimed biomass harvested by the Tyranids has long flowed back to the surrounding soil and air.
