Swords to Plowshares
Some warm memories about this one. Not because of the illustration itself, but because of the card being a reprint of one classic Magic: the Gathering card that utterly learned to fear back in the day. It felt strange, yet lovely, to be assigned to adapt this oldie to the aesthetics of Warhammer 40k.
It was also a rare example of a client heeding my advice and slightly changing the brief because of it. Small gestures like that really go a long way towards making an artist feel appreciated, and it’s one attitude I highly appreciate about working with the team at Wizards.
If you’re wondering, the initial brief featured another tank, a Land Rider, but I pointed out how much of a venerated relic each one of those is in-universe and how much of a sacrilege it would be to re-purpose it for farming duties. Adeptus Astartes have reduced planets to ash for less than that.
