Adeptus Astartes — Founding Unknown
“A weapon abandoned remains a weapon. A weapon broken may be repaired. A weapon corrupted must be destroyed.”
— Fragment of unknown origin preserved within the Chapter archives
Origins
There is no recognised record of the Venators’ founding.
No Founding has ever claimed them. No Primarch is officially named as their genetic forebear, and surviving Administratum records concerning their earliest campaigns are contradictory at best.
Even their home world is absent from many Imperial archives.
This is not accidental.
The Venators were never intended to exist.
Centuries ago, a secretive enclave within the Adeptus Mechanicus identified what it considered a dangerous imbalance within the military structure of the Imperium.
The Adeptus Astartes possessed enormous independence.
Individual Chapters maintained their own fleets, armouries, recruitment worlds and command structures. Some controlled territories spanning multiple systems.
Yet should one of these Chapters become unstable, corrupted or openly renegade, comparatively few Imperial forces could reliably confront it.
More concerning still were Chapters such as the Minotaurs — forces apparently capable of being directed against other Adeptus Astartes by authorities beyond the control of Mars.
To the enclave, this represented an unacceptable dependency.
Their conclusion was characteristically simple.
If others possessed a weapon capable of disciplining the Adeptus Astartes, Mars required its own contingency.
And so a project began that would never appear within the official histories of the Imperium.
The Selection
The enclave did not seek the most celebrated genetic lineage.
It sought the most appropriate.
Gene-seed archives were examined as data rather than sacred inheritance.
Each lineage was assessed according to stability, independence, sensory capability, psychological disposition and historical battlefield performance.
Eventually, one genetic template was selected.
Its designation was sealed.
Its use was forbidden.
Its original Legion had been condemned nearly ten thousand years before.
